在数字使用中，通常“9”以内的数字就用英语单词拼写，大于“9”的数字就用阿拉伯数字表示出来，比如：I want five copies. He wants 10 copies.
所描述的是同一范畴的事物时，数字的拼写要保持一致。我们可以选择用数字（阿拉伯数字）表示，前提是所出现的其中一个数字要大于9，那么该范畴中的所有数字都使用阿拉伯数字。比如：My 10 cats fought with their 2 cats.

物，而且其中的“10”又是大于“9”的在数字，那么，在写这个英语句字时我们可以用阿拉伯数字“10、2” 。
如果我们选择把句子中的数字拼写出来，不用阿拉伯数字表示的话，条件是其中一个数字是单个数字（比如，7、5、3），也就是9以内，那么这时我们将同范畴内的所有数字用单词拼写出来。比如，My ten cats fought with their two cats.这句中表示“两只猫”的数字“2”是在10以内，是单个阿拉伯数字。

如果我们写的句子中的数字表示的是不同范畴的东西，我们就可以用数字表示其中一个范畴，用单词拼写出另一个范畴的数字。比如：
Given the budget constraints, if all 30 history students attend the four plays, then the 7 math students will be able to attend only two plays. 这句中，我们用数字“30、7”表示“学生”这个范畴，用表示数字的英语单词“four、two”表示“话剧” 。
句中较大的数字通常要拼写出来，不用阿拉伯数字，并注意句子中要一致（有2个数字的话就要都写出来）。比如，You can earn from one million to five million dollars.
21到99的复合数字（不含30,40,50,60,70,80,90）拼写出来时，要用连字符连接。比如，Forty-three people were injured in the train wreck and twenty-three of them were hospitalized. 再比如，Mozart was only thirty-five years old when he died.
但书写再大的数字时，不需额外的连字符。比如：A leap year has three hundred and sixty-six days.例子中“300”写成 three hundred，而“66”则要用连字符“-” 。
在正式书写时或者说是正式的书面语中，1-20的数字都直接写出来，不用阿拉伯数字。比如：The American flag has thirteen stripes.不写成：The American flag has 13 stripes 。
但较大的数字可以用阿拉伯数字表示。比如： Writing was invented less than 6,000 years ago.
四位数字时，美国人通常不用逗号，英国人用逗号：比如，2000 years and 3700 people（美国）； 2,000 years and 3,700 people（英国）。
当数字是五个或者更大的数字时，通常要用一个或多个逗号。如：53,000 refugees；170,000 cases of AIDS；2,760,453 patents 。
数字位于句子开头时要拼写出来，最好不要以阿拉伯数字作为句子的开头。比如：Twenty-nine people won an award for helping their communities.

在表达小数时，要用数字（阿拉伯数字）表示。比如，The plant grew 0.79 of a foot in one year.
表示日期时，可用下列方式：The meeting is scheduled for June 30. 或者The meeting is scheduled for the 30th of June. 再比如：We have had tricks played on us on April 1.或者The 1st of April puts some people on edge.
