The Department of Chemical Engineering has fully-funded scholarships available for outstanding PhD applicants to start in 2020. Applications are open throughout the year.
The Department is one of the world’s leading institutions in both teaching and research of chemical engineering and covers a broad spectrum of science and engineering relevant to all areas of chemical engineering.
We are seeking outstanding researchers to join us. Applicants are expected to have obtained (or be heading for) a First Class Honours degree at Master’s level (or equivalent) in chemical engineering, another branch of engineering or a related science
Funding Note
The standard period of the scholarship is 42 months. The scholarships are open to all applicants regardless of their fee status and cover both tuition fees and an annual tax-free contribution to maintenance costs of approximately ￡16,777.

Distance learning, otherwise known as online learning, is a flexible approach to the delivery of our postgraduate research courses. This method of study gives you the unique ability to access our academic expertise and resources from anywhere in the world, while receiving the same level of expert support and supervision as on-campus students.
We offer PhD and Masters by Research programmes by distance learning across a range of subject areas in arts, law and humanities. Generally, these programmes do not have any taught content, and are completed with a thesis of 80,000 words for the PhD and 40,000 words for an MA by Research. You can choose to study either full-time or part-time.
Our distance learning research programmes include:

Course materials and supplementary information provided through our Virtual Learning Environment.
Regular supervisory sessions which take place through audio-visual communication services.
A fully-funded visit* to the University during each full year of your studies.
Online access to careers support at the University of Birmingham.
Discussion forums which allow you to connect with staff and other students.

Funding Notes
UK and EU students are now eligible for Government-backed Masters Loans of up to ￡10,609 and Doctoral Loans of up to ￡25,000. These are available to those studying by distance learning, as well as on campus, although specific eligibility criteria apply.
In addition, the College of Arts and Law offers a number of distance learning bursaries for research students, studying PhD or MA by Research programmes by distance learning. These awards are open to both current and prospective home/EU and overseas students, studying in all Schools in the College. Applications usually open in the autumn, with an application deadline of the following April.
